Owl Party

Sometimes you look at people and you think how the hell do they do it all.  I have one of those friends, her name is Didith.  She works full time, has three kids and always look great! The kicker is...she's always nice! HOW?! HOW!!???? Once again she killed me at her daughters 1st birthday party and Dedication.  Her theme was Owls.  It starts with the invitation, "Guess who's turning 1?" She then used the invitation that had an owl on it and blew it up to make an owl making station.  Check out all the other goodies at her party!  Thank you Didith for sharing. Didith literally hand cut 33 owls, stuffed them, sewed them closed, cut out every piece of the owls features in all different colors so that we could create our own owls.

URL Name Change

Thank you Josh for letting me know I can change my URL.  SpaceyStacie54 was way to hard to remember,  even for me. So it has officially been changed to www.sewlastminute.blogspot.com!!!!  Hope I don't lose any of my 15 followers. LOL.  

Christmas Make up Bags

The title suggests I make holiday bags. Wrong.  Every year I try and make my two girl cousins something for Christmas.  It doesn't always happen, but this year it did!! I made two make up bags or coin purses or wallets or whatever have you.  I used my new favorite pattern, the chevron pattern!  I got the fabric on my last NYC trip. I visited the infamous Mood Fabric Store.  They definitely have a lot of fabric and they definitely had what I was looking for.  

I know what you are thinking, "What is up with the cheesy lining??"  It's actually our grandma's fabric.  I'm giving it that sentimental touch. BAM.

Step 1:  My zipper is an 8" zipper so the width of the fabric should be 9".  The length can be whatever length you desire.  You don't have to do a lining, but I did. So the lining should match the dimensions of your exterior fabric.

 Step 2: Flip the zipper backwards facing the right side of your material. Use a zipper foot and sew along the matching edge.

Step 3: On the other side of the zipper sew exactly how you did with Step 2.

Your end result should look like this.

Step 5: If you are doing a lining, line up the the lining right side facing the wrong side of the outside fabric.  Then stitch along the edge.

Step 6: Do the same as step 5 with the other lining.

Step 7: Leave the zipper half open and then match up the two exterior fabric.  Do the same with the lining and pin all around.  Leave a 2 inch gap on the lining when you sew all the way around.  You'll need this gap to flip your material inside out.

Step 8 (optional):  To gussy up your bag you can create a gusset. Spread the edges outwards as in the picture and ink a line how deep you want your gusset.  I did a 1 1/2 inch gusset.  Your corner should look like a triangle with your line.  Sew where you created the line. 

Step 9:  Cut off the excess and leave half an inch.

So here you have it, with and without a gusset.  Oh, don't forget to sew up the 2 inch hole you have in the lining. =)

Keeping Keepsakes to a Minimum

The other day my sister-in-law asked me what I did with all the paper the kids bring home from daycare.  I told her I trash them.  Her answer, "cold blooded."  Really?  I mean I don't have any of my old work from when I was a kid and I bet neither does anyone else.  It just so happens when I was in my local Ichi Ban Kan they had these awesome organizers in different sizes and widths for $1.50.  So I got the smallest width and am now going to save only what can fit in these organizers.  Check it out.

Felt Hair Clips

I always go to fair's and see hipster girls make these felt hair clips and sell them for $5 a piece.  Of course I bought some and love it.  Then I go to the Japanese Daiso Store, where everything is practically a dollar and I see all the ingredients to make these so called hair clips.  All you need is cover buttons, some clips, felt and embroidery string.  All of this for $5!  So I gave it a whirl.  Unfortunately it was harder than I thought and my first attempt looks so home sewn! ERRR.. I did do a tutorial about it, but the end result is hideous. I think with a little more practice and bigger buttons and cuter felt colors I can get this right.

Step 1: Use fabric that has a print that can go on the button.

Step 2: Cut the picture you want on the button and follow the instructions on the box on how to create your button

Step 3: Cut out two identical felts to the shape you want as long as it is bigger than the clip.

Step 4: Cut a slit to connect one felt piece to the clip.

Step 5: Before you connect the button to the closure piece, insert your thread so you can attach the button to the clip.

Step 6:  Sew the button you just made to the felt and through the clip for a secure connection.

Step 7: Take a second string of embroidery string and stitch around the clip.

See the end result looks nothing like the one I bought.  Where I went wrong is the button I bought is too small in proportion to the clip itself and my stitching followed the clip instead of the felt.   Hopefully I can get this right and I can make gifts for people and now so can you.

I am Chuck Bass

I don't have to explain the title of this post he is Chuck Bass.  I'm talking about Gossip Girl people!  Get with the program.  So of course when I saw this tutorial on how to make bow ties I had to make one.  Since my picture tutorials suck please use the wonderful pictures from Papernstitch.  I did do some modifications from her instructions. Like skipping step 5 and not finishing the ends with the Velcro. Instead I used sticker Velcro and called it a day.  No one is going to see the ends, it will be tucked nicely under the shirt collar.  Call me lazy. =)
